What Makes Us Unique
Here at IU Kokomo we are committed to providing you with exceptional experiential learning. In nursing that means that we focus on providing the highest quality clinical learning experiences possible. Why? Because we know that hands-on learning, whether in one of our state-of-the-art simulation centers, in the community, at a statewide convention, or in an acute care hospital, is a key part of becoming the best nurse possible. We purposely plan our clinicals in small groups or individually in a preceptored environment for maximum learning and experience.

We're here to walk with you, challenge you, and prepare you for whatever comes next. If you have questions or want to talk to someone about the School of Nursing, please reach out!
Dedicated Education Units
Dedicated Educational Units (D.E.U.s) offer pre-licensure students a chance to work side-by-side, one-on-one with registered nurses in acute care. During these experiences, students are treated as a member of the health care team, leaving them with confidence and true on-the-job experience. This experience benefits the students, the nurses who get to work with them, and the patients they serve. D.E.U.s have been shown to facilitate student learning, professional modeling, improvement in student ability to prioritize and delegate, improved patient care, as well as the retention of new nurses, and improved patient satisfaction. The possibilities and achievements through the D.E.U. model is monumental to your growth as a nurse.
Capstone Semester Preceptorship
By the time you become a senior nursing student, you will be buzzing about what great experience you will have in the Capstone Preceptorship. Maybe your dream is to become a nurse in the Emergency Department, and you land an experience working side-by-side with an experienced ED RN. Or maybe you have a heart to serve in palliative care, working to ensure that our patients and families experience a dignified and comfortable death. Whatever your dream job, the Capstone Preceptorship can help you get started.
Learning and Working Together
Our hybrid and online R.N. to B.S.N. track gives you, an associate level working nurse, a practical way to take your career to the next level. We come to where you live and work. Through our hybrid track, you will have the opportunity to learn alongside your colleagues. We currently have cohorts at Riverview Health Hospital (Noblesville), IU Arnett Hospital (Lafayette), Ball Memorial Hospital (Muncie), and on the IU Kokomo campus. Through the online consortium, even if you don’t live close to one of our current cohorts, you can continue to work applying your new skills in real time with the flexibility of the online format.
Leadership Skills for Ever-Changing Health Care Environments
Dedicated to the development of leadership skills for an ever-changing healthcare environment, the Nursing Administration track propels you to the front of the pack. The focus of instruction is experiential learning that includes mastering skills such as Six Sigma, cost benefit analysis, developing a business plan, Plan-Do-Act (a problem solving process), and designing patient care environments.
Experiential Learning
Dedicated to facilitating the development of knowledge and skills to be a great nurse educator, the Nursing Education track will prepare you to develop other nurses. The focus of instruction is experiential learning in a high tech classroom environment. Students master skills such as ADDIE (instructional design) 3D graphics, animation, and creating QR Codes to enhance instructional strategies and development.
Face-to-face courses and health assessment labs with live, standardized patients, along with a variety of clinical placements are the backbone of ensuring our F.N.P. students have confidence in their decisions, advocate for patients, are proficient in using current technology, and prepared prior to starting clinical practice. You will use iHuman along with training in Ultra Sound diagnostic to develop differential diagnosis skills that will provide you with the knowledge and skills valued in a primary care practice.
