A Message From: Alan Krabbenhoft, Dean of the IUK School of Business
Good Morning. My name is Dr. Alan Krabbenhoft. The Dean of the School of Business at Indiana University Kokomo.
I would like to welcome you today to our Class of 2020 virtual Commencement Ceremony.
I, like you, never envisioned a Graduation Ceremony quite like this.
But know that IU recognizes that the most important thing is that we remain healthy and safe during this difficult time.
We celebrate you today. But please know that a live celebration is already being planned.
To begin, let me say first how proud I, and all of the faculty and staff in the School of Business, the Department of Public Health & Health Management and the Department of Hospitality & Tourism are of you.
You’ve completed a momentous journey in your life.
One of many you will attempt to conquer.
The word Commencement does not mean the end. Rather, it means the beginning.
Today begins that next step in your life’s journey.
Perhaps it will be your first post college job or maybe it’s that promotion or corner office you’ve been eyeing.
But today you are one step closer than you have ever been.
And it’s a giant step.
You are among a very select group of alums that now hold an IU degree.
Being a Hoosier Graduate is something special that no one can take away.
Your veins probably even have more crimson and cream running through them.
You can be proud of the many long hours of study, writing papers, solving homework, working on group projects that culminated int his day.
So, raise your head high.
But please also remember those that helped you get to today.
While you may not be gathering for a celebration, you can certainly give a shoutout to all of those family members and friends that cheered you along the way.
To those that propped you up when that difficult final exam was the next day. Or paid that tuition bill. Or covered a car payment so that you might be able to buy your books.
Many people have been in your corner.
Don’t forget to thank them.
This is likely a very proud and momentous day for them, as well.
Now, to many years ago I was a first generation college student.
Neither my parents nor my grandparents graduated from college.
Some didn’t even finish high school.
Because of this, they often couldn’t relate to what I was going through during my college years.
Nonetheless, they were supportive, as they knew a college degree could be transformative.
Given this, I would especially like to congratulate our first generation college graduates.
You are the first generation within your family that has pursued and completed a college degree.
What you’ve accomplished will have the power to transform future generations of your family members.
And well done.
While I’m here today extending my congratulations to all of you, I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding students in each of our programs, both at the undergraduate and graduate level.
And these are the outstanding students as was selected by our faculty.
Bachelor of Science in Business, our outstanding student was Ana Garcia.
In the Bachelor of Science in Public Administration, the outstanding student was Joanna Andrews.
In the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality & Tourism Management it was Pam Gurule.
At the graduate level our outstanding student in the Master’s of Business Administration program was April Wheeldon.
And in the Master’s of Public Management the outstanding student was David Tharp.
As I close, I cannot help but think about the feat you have accomplished.
And while we might not be able to give you the grand sendoff you would like, please know that day will come and we are looking forward to it.
For the time being, celebrate.
You deserve it.
Let this new chapter of your life unfold today.
Thank you and, again, congratulations.
