Career field that speaks to you and feels important? Check. Good outlook for future employment and exciting payscale? Check. You’re just about ready to hop on in and get started toward becoming an occupational therapist. Here are 4 things to keep in mind as you begin your educational journey:
- It’s never too early to start planning ahead. Imagine going into the grad school application process with research, job shadowing, and hands-on, real-world experience coupled with extracurricular activities and stellar references from your professors. If you know you want to become an O.T., begin thinking early about your graduate application. Programs can be selective and competitive so you want to ensure you stand out!
- Your academic advisor will be your new BFF. During your time as a student at IU Kokomo, you’ll want to get to know your academic advisor really well. Your advisor knows the ins and outs of the courses offered here, the scheduling of those courses, and the requirements to earn your degree while preparing for a graduate program. They’ve helped students just like you go on to chase their dreams; get to know yours and visit them often.
- You’ll want to keep an eye out for the STEPS program. At IU Kokomo, we have an exclusive program called STEPS designed for pre-health professional students to come together and prepare for the future. In this program, you’ll have the opportunity to experience mock interviews, reviews of the admissions process, healthcare facility tours, and job shadowing. Check your email and speak with faculty about this program regularly because there is only room for a few students annually.
- After earning your bachelor’s, you can get your Master of Occupational Therapy at IUPUI. After you earn your bachelor’s degree from IU Kokomo (most likely in biochemistry, biological and physical sciences, or biology), you’ll be on to your next destination: grad school. Earning your Master of Occupational Therapy can be done within the IU system at IUPUI. Check out the accordion below to see degree requirements for students who matriculate to IUPUI for O.T.
