The self-service lectern in room KC 148 works the same way as most other classroom lecterns do. To reserve a time and collect the key to the room, email CTLA.
There is the PC, a cable cubby with an HDMI cable you can connect your laptop to, and a touch panel for control. There is no document camera with this system. There is also a microphone for voice capture, and a clicker that can be used for presentations. The clicker also functions as a laser pointer.
Additionally, there is a remote that you can use to change the positioning of the camera if you are unable to get the right positioning from using the control panel.
Facing the screens, you will see that they are labeled, the one on your left “BEING RECORDED” and the one on your right “YOUR CONTENT.” “BEING RECORDED” will show what is going to be recorded for your audience. There are 2 lights, one over each screen.
At the top, there is the camera. Unlike other classroom lecterns, this is the only camera in the room. There is a large whiteboard in the room. It is placed at the most functional position in the room. The tape on the floor indicates its correct position for when you are using hand-writing extraction recording. Move this board away if you are recording Chrome Key-less CG Overlay and use the green screen.
The green screen on the wall is the backdrop for Chrome Key-less CG Overlay.
Begin by touching the control panel screen to turn the system on.
While that is booting up, log into the PC. This PC is the same as other classrooms; simply put in your username and password and pull up whatever you want to display (ZOOM, a PowerPoint, an image, etc.)
When the control panel is on fully, you will a screen that asks you to select an input to display.
Selecting “PC or Laptop” will display what is being shown on the PC or your laptop.
Selecting “Camera Preview” will display the camera view.
On the right-hand side, there are the volume controls. There are no speakers in the ceiling of this room, so the sound will come from the PC speakers.
If the lights above the screens do not turn on automatically, there is a red button on the home screen of the control panel in the bottom left-hand corner labeled “Light Off.” To turn them on, press that button, and it will turn green and be labeled “Lights On.”
Underneath the button for the lights is another button labeled “Capture Modes.”
After pressing this button, it will prompt you to select a capture mode; either “Handwriting Extraction” or “Chrome Key-less CG Overlay.”
This capture mode allows you to write on the whiteboard and have the text stay until you erase it, allowing students to see the writing even if you are in front of the board blocking it from view.
To zoom in or adjust the camera view, use the buttons on the control panel and the presets. The preset buttons will be highlighted in yellow when selected. If you have problems with the controls on the panel, use the remote that is on the lectern.
Move the white board to the side so that the green screen is visible.
This capture mode acts like a green screen. After selecting this mode, step out of view of the camera so that it can find the background. If you stand in the way during this process, you may be part of the background or it could be unable to work correctly. If this happens, select “Refresh Background” on the control panel and step out of the way again.
For best image and the least amount of glare interfering with the chrome key-less CG overlay feature, have the overhead lights in the room on.
When this mode is selected and you are standing in view of the camera, you will be able to see yourself in front of the projected content in the left screen, and the original content in the right screen.
1. Set up touch panel controls and video recording choices.
2. Login to the PC with your username and passphrase.
3. On the PC launch the app or program you will be recording e.g. PowerPoint or Zoom and then launch the Kaltura Classroom App.
4. In the Kaltura Classroom App check your microphone audio and ensure that the audio meter (on the right hard side of the app) is moving up and down as you speak.
5. When you are ready select the Start Recording button.
6. During the count down:
a. Minimise the Kaltura app.
b. Start your PowerPoint slide show (if you are using the Chrome Key-less CG Overlay). There is a remote clicker available for you to use to advance your slides.
c. Move to your position in front of the screens or whiteboard depending on which recording mode you have chosen.
d. Start speaking when the countdown is complete.
7. When you have finished recording return to your Kaltura App and click the square Stop button to the left of the record button.
8. A recording complete window opens:
a. Enter the title of your video.
b. Type in your username (VERY important – if you do not enter your username the video will NOT be saved.)
c. Click on SAVE. Your video will automatically be uploaded to Kaltura.
d. To find your recordings login to Kaltura.iu.edu and select MyMedia. Remember it takes a while for the recording to process so it may not be available immediately.
When you are finished, log out of the PC, turn off the microphone, and shut down the system with the control panel.
After logging out and shutting down, wipe down the lectern and such as you would in a classroom.
