File Requirements

To print your poster, you need to:
• Size your file to match your desired poster size.
• Save your file as a PDF.
• Contact IT Training at kotrain@iu.edu for help preparing your file.

Stretching out small files to poster size results in blurry text and pixelated photos.
Properly sizing your file ensures your content looks sharp and clear. Files that are not sized correctly will be rejected for printing.

Ready to print your poster? Contact us today! We look forward to working with you.

We have 24”, 36”, and 42” paper rolls for the plotter. You can choose any of these widths for your poster, and the length can be as long as you need. If you want a smaller poster, you can print it on one of our paper sizes, but we do not offer poster trimming.

You will need to submit your poster file in PDF format for printing. We recommend using Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe InDesign to create your poster. We offer training courses for making posters in each of these programs. Each of these programs is free for IU students, staff, and faculty. If you would like help setting up any of these software suites on your computer, please contact IT Training at kotrain@iu.edu. We do not recommend using Canva for posters as they require a paid subscription to resize your file.

You can use a variety of software to make your poster, such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Adobe Illustrator, or Adobe InDesign. IT Training offers online resources and in-person assistance to help you design your poster. Please use CMYK colors when designing your poster to ensure accurate color printing. Programs that use RGB colors, like Microsoft PowerPoint, may produce unexpected color variations when printed. For in-depth design tips, check out our guide on Creating Research Posters.

We print all our posters on heavyweight, matte-finish paper. We do not provide glossy or other paper finishes.

We do not provide backboards, stands, or tubes for posters. However, we wrap each poster in a water-resistant material to protect it during transport.

All posters are subject to IU’s content standards posted here. IU has a zero-tolerance policy regarding printing materials that fall into these categories:
• Sexual or pornographic material
• Racist material
• Anti-LGBT material
• Anti-religious material
