Finding a community and support system is important to your success as a student. The Latinos Unidos: Hispanic Center is here for you, as you navigate the transition into college life. Here you will find a safe space – regardless of your immigration status – to meet new friends, find resources for academic and personal support, and celebrate Latino culture!
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved through the center, the Latinx Student Association, or the student Spanish Club! Take part in trivia tournaments about Hispanic and Latino culture, lead a lesson in salsa dancing, or enjoy a Spanish-language film with your friends!
If you excel in the classroom, you can also join Sigma Delta Pi, the collegiate national Spanish honor society! There are so many ways to showcase the pride you have in your heritage and your culture!

The support of a family can be a crucial part of a college student’s success. If you have a child nearing college, you know it can be an exciting and overwhelming time.

The IU Kokomo Diversity Scholarship recognizes new students committed to bringing diversity, whether through lived experience, thought, word, or action to IU Kokomo.
The Diversity Scholarship is $1500, and is renewable for three additional years.
Eligibility: Student must be admitted and submit a scholarship application to IU Kokomo by December 1st.

This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate minority students attending any IU campus.

Learn more about the scholarshipGraduated in the top 20% of high school class, renewable for up to four years based on a cumulative GPA of 2.75, preference given to African American, Hispanic, Asian-American, and American Indian students, no recipient can receive more than four awards. Recipients determined by IUK Scholarship Committee.
A month into his freshman year at Indiana University Kokomo, Marcelo Leiva said being invited to perform at the campus Hispanic Heritage Month fiesta gave him a stronger connection to the campus.
“It promotes diversity, and exposure to other cultures, as well as the inclusion of those who belong to those cultures,” said Leiva, who grew up in Nicaragua. “It’s a way to make the campus feel more like home, have a little fun, and understand the cultural significance of people of Hispanic origin in the United States.”

A class trip to New York City inspired Adrian Gazcon to dream big about his artistic career.
“I told myself that one day, I would come back to New York to have an exhibit or something with art,” said Gazcon, a senior at Indiana University Kokomo.

Until she was 13, Karedis Araujo lived a comfortable middle-class life in Venezuela.
Even as a young teenager, however, she could sense the unrest around her, as sudden declines in the price of oil destabilized the economy and undermined the government.
“I was scared,” said Araujo, now a sophomore at Indiana University Kokomo. “I did not want to keep living there. It’s basically a dictatorship. My parents didn’t want to go, because it meant leaving everything they’d worked for their whole lives.”
The day they attended a political protest, everything changed.
