Receive Your Refund

Are you eligible for a refund?

If you have a credit balance due to dropped courses, excess financial aid, or a resolved tuition dispute, you’ll receive a refund.

Getting your refund

Refunds are usually processed within five business days after the credit is posted to your student account. When you receive it will vary, depending on whether you’ve set up direct deposit or are having a college refund check mailed to you. (Credit card payments that result in a credit balance will be refunded to the credit card and should appear within 10 business days,)

TIf you haven’t signed up for direct deposit, we’ll mail your check to your local address—so make sure you keep your address current. Mailed checks will usually arrive within 7–10 business days after the processing date shown on your account. If you don’t receive your refund check within 10 business days, you should issue a stop payment request so your refund can be re-sent to you.

When you'll receive your refund

After your financial aid is applied to eligible charges—such as tuition, mandatory fees, and other allowable expenses—any remaining credit balance will be refunded to you. You do not need to request a refund; the process happens automatically.

At IU Kokomo, most financial aid is disbursed on Tuesdays after the first week of classes, and refunds begin Wednesdays of the second week for fall and spring semesters.

Once your refund is issued, it typically takes 2–5 business days to reach your bank account if you use direct deposit.

You may still owe a balance

Even if you receive a refund, you may still owe a balance under certain circumstances. For example:

  • You have not completed your Title IV authorization, so federal aid cannot pay certain charges.
  • Your enrollment changes after aid is disbursed.
  • Your financial aid package is adjusted after disbursement.

To avoid unexpected charges, review your student account regularly in One.IU and make sure your Title IV authorization is submitted.

What happens if you drop or withdraw

If you drop classes or withdraw from the university after receiving a refund, you may be required to repay all or part of the refunded amount. Refund and withdrawal calculations follow federal and university guidelines.

To understand how withdrawal affects your refund amount, review the IU Kokomo refund schedule. This schedule outlines refund percentages based on the week you withdraw and varies for full-term, 8-week, and nonstandard-length courses.

You may owe money even if you get a refund

Remember to sign your Title IV authorization. If you don’t, your financial aid may not pay off your entire bursar bill. You may get a refund but also have an outstanding balance on your student account. You must pay the balance by the due date to avoid late payment fees and holds on your account.
