New Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling

Indiana University Kokomo fills a need for mental health care providers, launching its Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program during the fall 2018 semester. The program has long been requested, both by students and employers, according to Kathy Holcomb, chairperson of the psychology department, which surveyed human service organizations in north central Indiana to assess the need. “Our community needs more licensed mental health providers, and this program allows us to fill that need,” she said. “We’ve heard from many undergraduate students that they want this, as a way to further their careers. They’ve been waiting for this opportunity.”

Fourteen nurses donned the symbol of their mission to become primary health care providers, and the trust placed in them by patients, at Indiana University Kokomo’s White Coat ceremony Monday (August 7). With proud family and friends in the audience, each student in the School of Nursing’s Family Nurse Practitioner (F.N.P.) program crossed the Kresge Auditorium stage, to put on the white coat for the first time. They earned the garment by completing the first two of seven semesters of the program.

As a four-year veteran Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA US) employee, Brayden Lucas looks forward to moving up within the company. He’s taking the necessary steps to be eligible when opportunity knocks by enrolling in the new Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) cohort program, a partnership between Indiana University Kokomo and FCA US. “A lot of the jobs I’m interested in require a master’s degree,” said Lucas, a maintenance supervisor at Indiana Transmission Plant 1. “This opportunity is local, and FCA US was willing to work with the schedule, which will make it easier to complete. This should open a lot of doors to new opportunities for me.”
