Is life directing you down a new path? Take your skills and career experiences to Indiana University Kokomo and become a teacher through one of our Transition to Teaching (T2T) programs.
We are proud to offer three distinct licensure pathways: Elementary, Secondary, and All Grade Education, giving you the option to choose the path that best aligns with your passion and career goals. Our flexible learning options are designed to fit your schedule and needs, allowing you to balance your education with your other life commitments.
You can even start teaching while earning your license! If you are employed in an Indiana school and accepted into our program, you may be eligible for a three-year T2T permit. This permit will allow you to begin teaching immediately, gaining valuable practical experience as you complete your program.
Complete your program in four semesters and earn your teaching license in as little as 18 months!
Transition to Teaching – Elementary
The Elementary T2T program at IU Kokomo allows individuals with degrees in other fields to transition into elementary education. By completing the program and successfully passing your state licensing exams, you will earn an Indiana teaching license, qualifying you to teach children in grades K-6.
Graduate tuition per-credit hours can be found at the Office of the Bursar. Additional fees apply for select coursework.

Transition to Teaching – Secondary
Our Secondary T2T program allows individuals with content area expertise to be licensed to teach at middle school or high school (grades 5-12) in the state of Indiana. Certain content areas can be added to an existing valid teaching license through testing alone.

Transition to Teaching – All Grade
The All Grade T2T program allows individuals with content area expertise to be licensed to teach across all grade levels, preschool through high school (P-12), in the state of Indiana.
IU Kokomo offers secondary licenses in the following content areas:
- Art
- Computer Science
- Music
- Physical Education
- World Languages
- 21 credit hours
- Structured to be completed in four semesters, including summer
- Mostly online

Master’s Degree Pathway
Complete your master’s degree with just four additional courses through our partnership with IU Southeast. You can pursue a Master of Science in Education with a Major in Elementary Education or Secondary Education.

Need financial support?
We understand that the cost of a degree can be intimidating, or even could prevent you from considering a degree. IU Kokomo and the Division of Education offer resources for students in need of financial support, including scholarships.
Transition to Teaching Scholarships
The Transition to Teaching Scholarship provides students interested in pursuing a career in education the opportunity to earn a one-time, non-renewable scholarship of up to $10,000. In exchange, students agree to teach for five years at an eligible Indiana school or repay the prorated scholarship amount.
The Future Educator Scholarship is available to incoming and current undergraduate and graduate students. You must be pursuing a degree in education to be eligible for this award.
A total of $10,000 is awarded to aspiring K-12 educators through the annual Teachers Test Prep “Pass the Torch” Teacher Scholarships program – one $5,000 scholarship is given to a recipient planning a career in elementary education, and one $5,000 scholarship is granted to a recipient planning a career in secondary education.

Student Loan Information
Indiana University Kokomo offers both federal and private student loan options. Students are encouraged to explore federal loans first before considering private loans.
