Concerned about a student, colleague, or friend? On this page you will find practical guidance for recognizing warning signs, responding effectively, and supporting others while connecting them with the right resources.
Reach out and show you care
Always observe your situation and assess for safety. If the distressed individual has a weapon or is physically acting out, do not engage. If you or others are in danger, contact IUPD-Kokomo at765-455-9363 or 911 as soon as you are able to do so.
How You Can Help
Supporting someone in need doesn't mean having all the answers. Sometimes the most important step is listening, showing you care, and helping connect them with the right support. Just remember to CARE.
C - Check In
- Notice changes in behavior, mood, attendance, or communication.
- Ask how they are doing in a private, supportive setting.
A - Ask & Listen
- Ask open-ended questions.
- Listen without judgement or trying to "fix" the problem.
R - Respond with Support
- Validate their feelings.
- Stay calm.
- If there are concerns about safety, don't leave the person alone.
E - Encourage Professional Help
- Help connect them with CAPS or other campus resources if it is a non-emergency.
- If there is an immediate safety concern, contact emergency services or campus police.
