There is no one way to feel following an emergency situation or a traumatic event. You may experience a range of strong emotions. This page is a resource to help you navigate and understand how to move forward and begin to heal or help those close to you do so.
In the wake of tragedy, you may feel everything from sadness to relief to uncertainty. Every person will respond differently. Please be respectful to others, as there is no roadmap to navigating the emotional aftermath of a traumatic event or emergency. However you are feeling, it can be intense, unpredictable and overwhelming. Below are a number of resources to help you understand your reactions and the steps you can take to help move forward to begin the healing process and restore and a sense of control.
For all emergency situations where someone requires immediate medical assistance and/or is in immediate danger to him/herself or others, call 911 or Indiana University Police Department Kokomo at 765-455-9363.
The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office can provide support for students at no cost. Appointments are available M-F from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (with later hours available if necessary). Consultation and referrals are also available for faculty, staff, and parents.
