His professional service record for Indiana University, particularly the Kokomo campus, as well as to the community in general, demonstrates his strong and enthusiastic belief in service. He has participated in several university councils and faculty senate committees. In all of these committees, he shared his ideas and offered suggestions that he felt might help. His service to the community in both a professional and an informative capacity demonstrates his active participation beyond the immediate parameters of IU Kokomo. In the informative capacity, Dr. K Kasem has had presentations about the history, health, social practices, and cultural traditions of Middle Eastern countries. In the professional capacity, he has been a judge of regional science fairs, had presentations of science seminars for local schools, and has arranged teaching and correspondence courses. He has also has experience in technical counseling with consultations in electroplating, corrosion, electropolymerization, and chemical analysis and analytical techniques. Dr. K Kasem has reviewed more than 100 research articles and several research proposals. He also works as an external reviewer for promotion and tenured faculty in several USA universities.

Philosophy: I believe that the instructor at the college level is not a book interpreter.  In order to avoid students' frustrations or boredom with their textbooks,  I believe a professor should edit information narrated in such books by adding to deficiencies in the information given, or by deleting extensively windy or unnecessary information.  When teaching chemistry majors a professor should, despite the level of the course, review fundamental basics of chemistry in the introductory lectures of the semester (e.g. review sessions.) He/she should also correlate materials covered in class to complement a coinciding lab to better reinforce covered subjects and he/she should provide an intellectual challenge to substantiate students' talents in modern chemistry.  Finally, I believe a thorough professor may assign a chemistry student a small project which would further that student's understanding and application of chemistry in his/her chosen field.

Approach: Initially, I assess the potential of the student based on his/her prior exposure to chemistry in general (pre-lab quizzes or first exams usually offer significant information).  I then create tests that enable my students to understand the importance of model-building, the necessity for integrating course content, and as a vehicle for communicating my philosophy of teaching.  My tests do not merely focus on evaluation but also on development of intellectual-mindedness.  This approach reflects the educational research which aims at meta-level thinking.  Finally, I encourage students to seek special help which I offer through my office hours. I average about 10 hours per week, which services approximately 30 students.

    Research

    Research Goals and Objectives

My research interest and experience is focused on synthesis and characterizations of functional nano- and micro-structures with novel electronic and photonic properties. The research activities involve inorganic and organic semiconductors synthesis, surface chemistry, nano- and micro-pattern assemblies. Photo-electrochemical techniques will be used as characterization tools for fundamental heterogeneous charge transfer and photo-physical process. In particular, studying how fundamental physical quanta – electrons, photons and phonons are coupled to each other in the nanometer scale and it can be manipulated to serve technological applications.

Possible applications are in inorganic/organic semiconductors interfaces (IOI), nano-structured inorganic solar cells, thin solid oxide fuel cells, and Hydrogen production. This research can be multidisciplinary in nature. This will maintain comprehensive experimental facilities for growth and analysis.
