Whether it's as small as skipping the straw or as major as starting restoration projects for wildlife, you can make a change for a better, more sustainable world for future generations. The Office of Sustainability at Indiana University Kokomo is all about working together to make our campus and our region a better place for all.

What is sustainability? Why is it important?

Sustainability follows standards that do not deplete our natural resources and that maintain ecological balance.

The efforts towards sustainability encompass different aspects of the human experience in broad topics that range from business to environmental issues. These vary in degree and can be implemented both at home and on a global scale.

The goal is to preserve as many of our resources as possible for future generations and to help create a more hopeful and healthy tomorrow.

Though sustainability is most often associated with natural resources, it also encompasses human society, cultural heritage, ideas, values, and ethics. Universities play a vital role in fostering the interdisciplinary thinking that is essential in defining and developing a responsible relationship between humans and the natural world.

Birds of prey showcase importance of sustainability

Momentarily oblivious to the room full of people admiring him, a peregrine falcon — a living environmental success story - snacks on chicken during a presentation at Indiana University Kokomo.

Mark Booth, executive director of Take Flight! Wildlife Education, said after nearly being wiped out by pesticide use, environmental regulations helped the species recover, enough to be removed from the endangered list.

Elementary students become citizen scientists in campus BioBlitz

It may have looked like the children visiting Indiana University Kokomo were just playing as they ran through the meadow on the north side of campus, picking up leaves and chasing bugs.

But they were actually engaged in citizen science, gathering data about the plants and animals that live on campus.

The Office of Sustainability partnered with the Howard County Stormwater District to host 75 fourth and fifth graders from Sts. Joan of Arc and Patrick School Thursday (September 21) for a BioBlitz.

Meet the Bees event creates buzz on campus

It was a “bee-utiful” day to learn about pollinators.

Dressed in white protective gear, Denise Shue, who maintains Indiana University Kokomo’s bee hives, opened the hives and talked through the inspection process with nearly 40 people watching from the safety of a screened tent during a Meet the Bees event.
